Résumé En

« Between history and legend : investigations into the use of the terms ἱστορία, ἱστορεῖν, ἱστοριογράφος and ἱστορικός in the Scholia vetera on the Olympian Odes of Pindar » The present article deals with the sense of ἱστορία and terms of the same family in the Scholia vetera on Pindar’s Olympian Odes. We remark that in this corpus, the sense of the terms ἱστορία, ἱστορεῖν and ἱστορικός is remarkably large and multidimensional, and can refer to narratives whose content oscillates between local history, contemporary history, geography, mythology and historical or legendary genealogy. The terms can thus cover both history and myth, that is, the two broad areas of the Greeks’ interest for the past (their own past, as well as the others’ past). In investigating and establishing this ample ἱστορία, poets and historians are seen as equally reliable sources ; scholiasts do sometimes refer to the poets’ search for reliable local history sources allowing poets to establish ἱστορία, in order for them to be then able to narrate it. Several scholia allow for the possibility of a perfect agreement between poets and historians on subjects of ἱστορία.
