Jan Keetman, « The grammaticalization of lú as a relative and indefinite pronoun in Sumerian », Revue d’assyriologie et d’archéologie orientale, ID : 10670/1.pmp2n2
This article will demonstrate that “lú” (man) was not used instead of, or like, a relative and indefinite pronoun in Sumerian, but underwent a process of grammaticalization after which the relative and indefinite pronoun lú was separated from lú “man.” This is clear from the semantic bleaching of lú as a pronoun, which can be demonstrated from Gudea onward. This doesn’t mean that this development occurred in the Gudea period or just before. In some early dynastic royal inscriptions, lú is often used before relative clauses. Less common is the usage of lú as a determinative pronoun. Since níĝ is used in the same way as lú, but not for any class of person, níĝ must be regarded as a relative and indefinite pronoun too.
