A mythical event in American memory, the Lewis and Clark expedition has been the object of an intense historical debate revolving around the issue of its true motivations and results, whether strategic, scientific, or practical. Recent historians have stressed the significance of the ambiguous relationship with Native American tribes that was very much at the core of the expedition. This paper seeks to complement this view by highlighting the technical dimension of the Lewis and Clark expedition: here was a partially undetermined project, whose leaders were equipped with a set of instruments meant to help them deal best with circumstances and bring back records of their voyage. It can thus be argued that the Lewis and Clark expedition set a model of cultural policy that was to have an influence on the development of the arts and sciences in the United States.
