The etymology that is traditionally attributed to the French words bardache, barda and bredindin is highly questionable. A thorough examination leads one to the conclusion that the three of them belong to an extensive whole forming a phonosymbolic matrix BRD which is attested not only in the Gallo-Roman world but also in the Italic and Iberian domains. It could date back to Late Antiquity.
