Résumé 0

Social relations between individuals and in the context of the groups with which they are associated are created from different standpoints which are seldom egalitarian. There are rich and poor, young and old, nationals and foreigners, etc. In a world organised along hierarchical lines, racism and discrimination, both direct and indirect, can spring up unchecked. Despite formal conceptions and models of medical care and treatment, despite specific codes of ethics for the different groups of professional carers, and despite a generally accepted code of practice which, in countries like France or Canada, advocates equality in access to health care services and facilities, the world of health care is itself a social space and here, like everywhere else, racism is able to find a suitable host and contexts where it can develop. Very often it is cloaked in what some call "ordinary racism", in other words, practices that are sufficiently well integrated into our daily activities that they pass unnoticed or become quite commonplace. In this article, we show that this form of racism is underpinned by a structured racism which offers individuals clearly differentiated place in society according to the colour of their skin.
