Pourtant ce ne fut pas le cas, et plusieurs documents des archives de la cour des Qing révèlent que beaucoup fut fait pour que ces précieux cadeaux soient conservés de manière adéquate, certains ayant même perduré jusqu’à nos jours.

In 1793, the British government sent a major diplomatic mission to China led by Lord Macartney. According to past interpretations of this, these presents received the full attention of neither the Qianlong emperor nor his court officials. However, this was not actually the case, and a host of Qing court archival documents reveal that great pains were taken to ensure that these precious gifts were conserved appropriately, and some of them even survive today.
