Résumé 0

Using a case from clinical practice, this study shows how to integrate cultural and religious syncretism as a resource that can facilitate psychotherapy. The information was collected for a 40-year-old woman (and her family) of Nawda culture by way of clinical interviews and observations, during and after her stay in a hospital in Togo. The psychopathological interpretation of this case pinpoints a major difficulty in diagnosing and managing certain mental disorders in the local socio-cultural context. Indeed, while the risk of early psychiatrization of certain manifestations of psychotic appearance is very real in Africa, the inclusion of cultural realities in the definition of psychological normality is an important criterion to avoid missing genuine psychological suffering.
