This article tries to assess the importance of service sector employment in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Employment in most services grew considerably over that period. Except in transport and distribution, the main determinant behind that growth was income. Services were highly concentrated in London and the South East. Changes in the distribution of the working population show that Britain was already a mature economy. The contribution of services to the economic development of Britain in Victorian and Edwardian times was much more important than is generally thought and has to be reappraised.
