The 1930s in France: a period of anti-Semitic radicalizationThe 1930s were years of both liberation and radicalization of anti-Semitism in France. Due to economic crises and political tensions at home and abroad, anti-Jewish prejudices increased in intensity. This phenomenon spread within different social layers besides the traditional anti-Jewish circles, and recognized no inhibitions whatsoever in its form of expression. The red line of collective physical violence was crossed several times on French soil ranging from overall deterioration of behavior to militant aggressions. The process of vilification which took place fed people’s minds with the idea t the “Jewish problem” was a core issue. This article aims to present a general view of anti-Semitic phenomena and questions, and to show the continuous connection between the resurgent period of anti-Semitism and the ensuing years which brought about the foundation of an anti-Semitic state.
