The word is a gregarious animal. To signifiy it acts in organized band and it absolutely requires the collaboration of its fellow men. For this purpose, it founds with them ephemeral associations that we use to call sentences. The sentence is an event spread over time. It only exists in the actual duration of its own deployment, and it has a mandatory « sens » [direction], an obligatory temporal orientation. The « sens » [meaning] could be nothing more than the time-oriented vector, the arrow that makes us transit (whether we are speaker or receiver) from word to word throughout the interior time of the sentence. The meaning as an arrow crossing the units of a sentence is what I intend to think about here.

Le mot est un animal grégaire. Pour signifier, il agit en bande organisée, il requiert absolument la collaboration de ses semblables, et à cette fin il fonde avec eux des associations éphémères que nous nommons des phrases. La phrase est quant à elle un événement s’étalant dans la durée. Elle n’a d’existence que dans la durée effective de son propre déploiement, et elle a un sens obligatoire, une orientation temporelle obligée. Le sens, ce n’est donc peut-être rien d’autre que le vecteur temporel orienté, la flèche qui nous fait transiter (que nous soyons locuteur ou récepteur) de mot en mot tout au long du temps intérieur de la phrase. Le sens comme une flèche traversant les unités d’une phrase, c’est ce à quoi je me propose de réfléchir ici.
