Les représentations de la Résistance dans le cinéma français ont largement évolué depuis 1945. À la Libération, les films tendent en effet à exalter l’armée des ombres, en soulignant le patriotisme des clandestins, mais en taisant leurs divisions et leurs engagements politiques. Mais à partir de 1958, et a fortiori de 1973, l’image de la Résistance devient plus complexe. Sans pourtant inspirer de chefs-d’œuvre, à de rares exceptions près. Car l’action clandestine s’est souvent résumée à des tâches monotones et répétitives, sans grand intérêt dramatique, et la flamme militante est difficile à représenter sans sombrer dans le pathos ou le déclamatoire. Une aporie que le septième art n’a pas réussi à dépasser.

Representations of the French Resistance in French cinema have evolved considerably since 1945. Immediately after the Liberation, films tended to exalt the army of shadows, emphasizing the patriotism of the clandestine fighters but drawing a veil over their divisions and political engagements. However, from 1958 onwards, and all the more so since 1973, the image of the French Resistance became more complex, at the risk of blurring. This shift, with a few rare exceptions, did not inspire much in the way of cinema masterpieces. The reason is that clandestine action often consists of monotonous and repetitive tasks, with no major dramatic interest, and the passion of the militant is difficult to depict without sinking into pathos or declamations. This is an aporia that the seventh art has not yet managed to solve.
