La pensée d’Edward W. Said est souvent réduite en France aux études postcoloniales, qu’il a contribué à fonder par deux livres majeurs : Orientalism (1978) et Culture and Imperialism (1993). Il convient toutefois de prendre en compte l’ensemble du travail critique de Said sur la littérature, la musique, la politique : Joseph Conrad and the Fiction of Autobiography (1966), Beginnings : Intention and Method (1975), The World, the Text and the Critic (1983), qui n’ont pas encore été traduits en français. Il s’agit ainsi de poser la question de l’humanisme saidien, qui, se référant à Vico et à Auerbach, participe aux débats, dans le contexte nord-américain, autour du « canon occidental » et des humanités.

Beyond the ground-breaking Orientalism (1978) and Culture and Imperialism (1993), Said’s whole critical work on literature, music and politics should be taken in consideration : Joseph Conrad and the Fiction of Autobiography (1966), Beginnings : Intention and Method (1975), The World, the Text and the Critic (1983), still to be translated into French. The question of a saidian « humanism » is once again at stake. Refering to Vico and Auerbach, Said participates in the North-American debate on the « Western canon » and Humanities.
