« Lanterne magique » (Lorrain) et Mouny-Robin (Sand) : le chœur du fantastique

Dans une démarche comparatiste, l’article analyse deux récits brefs de George Sand et de Jean Lorrain, à savoir respectivement Mouny-Robin et « Lanterne magique », récits distants de près de soixante ans (1841 et 1900) et que rapprochent une structure identique (des récits enchâssés), une thématique musicale (deux représentations d’opéra, le Freischütz de Carl Maria von Weber et La Damnation de Faust d’Hector Berlioz) et une interrogation commune (le devenir du fantastique littéraire en époque positiviste). La réflexion met au jour l’art et la manière de fantastiquer de la part de chaque auteur, avec chez Lorrain un fantastique fin-de-siècle d’esprit décadentiste qui tend à recouvrir la surface du réel d’images destinées à l’ inquiéter, et, chez Sand, un fantastique plus « pittoresque » et folklorisant.

A comparative approach leads this paper’s analysis of two short stories by George Sand and Jean Lorrain, Mouny-Robin and « Lanterne magique », stories separated by almost sixty years (1841 and 1900), but similar through their structure (embedded narration), their musical themes (two opera performances, Carl Maria von Weber’s Freischütz and Hector Berlioz’La Damnation de Faust), and a common issue (the future of the fantastic genre or in general of fantasy within a positivistic environment). This study brings to light the art and manner of fantastiquer, or fantasize and create a work of fantasy – for each of the authors : for Lorrain a fin-de-siècle type of fantasizing in a decadent spirit which tends to plaster over reality with images whose goal is to make it uncanny, and, with Sand, more picturesque and « folkloric » types of fantasy.
