From Greek Imperials to Roman Provincial Coins : a Reinstatement of an Old Conception. Coins issued by Greek cities used to be called “ Greek imperials”, indicating that they were struck under the Roman Empire but mostly with legends in Greek. In the past, they were deemed to be part of Greek coinage, and they were catalogued and classed in coin cabinets as Greek coins. The new terminology – Roman provincial coinage – stresses the role of these coins alongside imperial coinage. This unifying term nevertheless covers considerable diversity : coins of individual Greek cities with or without an imperial portrait (these last often called “pseudo-autonomous”), coins struck by leagues, koina, Roman colonies or municipia.

Les monnaies émises par les cités grecques à l’époque impériale étaient connues sous le vocable d’« impériales grecques ». La nouvelle terminologie adoptée – celle de monnayage provincial romain – met l’accent sur le rôle qu’ont joué ces monnayages à côté du monnayage impérial. Ce vocable unificateur recouvre toutefois des réalités diverses : monnayages locaux de cités grecques sur lesquels figure ou non un portrait impérial (dans ce cas, ces monnayages sont fréquemment appelés « pseudo-autonomes »), monnayages de ligues, de koina, de colonies ou de municipes romains.
