Que nous apporte le nouveau concept d’addictologie ? Va-t-il modifier profondément nos représentations, nos pratiques, nos modes d’organisation, ou n’est-il qu’une manifestation d’un retour en force de la médecine dans un champ pourtant si peu réductible à sa seule dimension biologique ? À partir d’un effort de définition et d’interprétation historique et anthropologique de ce concept, nous devons nous demander en quoi il renouvelle notre pensée et nos actions, quels en sont les limites et quels nouveaux combats s’annoncent ? Cela tout à la fois dans les domaines de la prévention, de l’intervention thérapeutique et de la politique de l’État. Le secteur médico-social, en voie de structuration dans l’addictologie, a un rôle spécifique et important à jouer quant aux réponses qui seront données aux usagers et à la société. Les acteurs de l’addictologie médico-sociale doivent donc s’engager dans cette réflexion.

What is the new concept of “addictology” bringing to us, drug professionals? Is it going to deeply modify our views, practices and organisational ways, or is it only a strong comeback of medicine in a field that cannot yet easily be reduced to its biological dimension only? Starting with an attempt to defining this concept and its historical and anthropological construction, we should wonder whether it renews our thinking and actions, what its limits are and which new fights can be foreseen. And this, in many fields: prevention, therapeutic interventions and state policy. The medico-social field, which is in an on-going structuration in the addictology discipline, has an important and specific role to play concerning the answers that will be given at the same time to drug users and to the society. The professionals working in the medico-social addictology field have to think about all that.
