Un modèle numérique bidimensionnel intégrant les équations des ondes longues dans un bassin littoral a été utilisé pour simuler un cycle mensuel de marées dans la Manche, avec ses modulations semi-mensuelle et mensuelle. Les solutions obtenues (dénivellations de la surface libre de la mer, et composantes NS et EW des courants moyennés sur chaque verticale) ont été confrontés à la réalité, au moyen d'une analyse spectrale détaillée des résultats numériques, d'une part, et d'une collection d'observations in situ, d'autre part. La comparaison des résultats est satisfaisante : elle apporte ainsi une bonne confiance sur la qualité des solutions numériques obtenues à l'aide de cette simulation. L'analyse de la partie basse fréquence des séries temporelles simulées conduit à identifier des grandeurs caractéristiques des courants résiduels sur la zone étudiée : variation spatiale du niveau moyen de la surface libre, et courants moyens eulériens, amplitude et déphasage des ondes à longue période MS et M qui modulent ces niveaux et courants moyens au cours du mois. Des cartes donnant la distribution de ces quantités sur toute la Manche ont été dressées ; elles sont difficiles à valider, car nous ne disposons pas de données d'observation in situ vraiment fiables pour établir des comparaisons. Quelques mesures de courants de longue durée viennent cependant conforter certaines caractéristiques de ces résultats .
