Remarks on the legal culture of Orthodox Greeks under the Ottoman rule (mid xvth-mid xixth centuries)This paper outline the characteristics of the legal culture of the Greek Orthodox communities in the Ottoman Empire, from the Fall of Constantinople (1453) to the reforms of the Hatt-i Humayoun of 1856. It examines the development of private law adopted by the Greek Orthodox population within the framework of Islamic and Ottoman law. It sheds new light on the interplay between these two legal orders and the law of the Orthodox Church and Greek customary law.
