Avant la Révolution, il existait en France des corps intermédiaires. Quelques-uns étaient vraiment des corps intermédiaires, d’autres se revendiquaient comme tels. Les parlements, quoique hautes cours de justice, prétendaient être les représentants de la Nation avec le soutien des avocats. Ils contribuèrent à la chute de l’Ancien Régime en réclamant la convocation des États généraux. Les véritables corps intermédiaires étaient les pouvoirs locaux traditionnels : les états de certaines provinces et les municipalités des principales villes. Le roi et le peuple les considéraient comme tels. Dans le monde marchand, si les chambres de commerce furent conçues comme des corps intermédiaires, les juridictions consulaires, créées pour être des tribunaux, revendiquèrent néanmoins la représentation des intérêts marchands contre les municipalités et les organisations professionnelles. Les révolutionnaires supprimèrent la plupart de ces structures.

There were corps intermédiaires in France before the Revolution. Some were really corps intermédiaires when others just claimed to be so. Despite their status of high courts of justice, parliaments pretented to be the representatives of the Nation with the support of lawyers. They contributed to the fall of the Old Regime by calling for the convening of the Estates General. The true corps intermédiaires were the traditional local authorities : the estates of some provinces and the municipalities of the major cities. The king and the people regarded them as such. In the commercial world, the chambers of commerce were created as corps intermédiaires but the juridictions consulaires, planned to be merchant courts, claimed nonetheless to be the representatives of commercial interests against the municipalities and the professional organizations. The revolutionaries removed most of these structures.
