Painted scenes on vases represent an alternative way to approach the issue of hierarchy and relations of dependency in military contexts in the archaic period. This is particularly relevant for a period which lacks complementary literary sources. Scenes on Attic vases may be highly stylized, produced according to a set of aesthetic conventions, but they may also offer relevant details regarding the military activities, situations and relations of their time. The methodology to obtain and process those details, however, must be reconsidered according to new criteria, prioritizing the characteristics of visual composition over the simple identification of the scene.
