Au début de son séminaire RSI, en 1974, Lacan pose la question « Quelle est l’erre de la métaphore?». Elle se réfère au problème posé par la nomination du réel dans le nœud borroméen. Celle-ci comporte une dualité problématique : le réel désigne à la fois le sens de l’un des ronds, et à ce titre son emploi est métaphorique, et la consistance propre du nœud qu’une triplicité «expulsée du sens» caractérise. Nous montrerons comment, au cours de ce séminaire et du suivant, Le sinthome, Lacan résout ce problème avec l’ajout d’un quatrième rond, dit de nomination, au nœud borroméen. Les conséquences qui s’ensuivent, notamment pour la définition du symptôme, trouvent un rebondissement avec ce qu’il baptise «nœud borroméen généralisé», qui est un nœud à trois issu d’une mise en continuité du nœud à quatre.
