Diffusés en langue française au début des années 1970 au moment où l’École de Francfort éveille l’intérêt du public francophone, les écrits de Jürgen Habermas ont tout de suite été remarqués, commentés et discutés. Cet article retrace l’histoire de la réception de Habermas en langue française en s’attachant à montrer l’accueil que reçoivent ses principaux ouvrages et prises de position dans les cercles intellectuels francophones. La pensée de Habermas a suscité de nombreux débats, parfois des controverses, en abordant des thèmes qui touchaient au vif la philosophie française centrée sur la postmodernité, le différend ou la mésentente. En plus de restituer les débats qui ont opposé Habermas aux penseurs français de renom (Ricœur, Lyotard, Foucault, Derrida, etc.), on dresse ici un panorama de l’évolution des réactions suscitées par les problématiques majeures de la théorie habermassienne.

Disseminated in French at the beginning of the 1970s when the Frankfurt School attracted the attention of the French-speaking public, the writings of Jürgen Habermas were immediately noticed, commented on, and discussed. This article traces the history of Habermas’s reception in the French language by showing how his main works and positions have been treated in French-speaking intellectual circles. Habermas’s thought has provoked many debates—and sometimes controversies—by addressing themes that cut to the heart of French philosophy, centered on postmodernity, disagreement, or misunderstanding. In addition to reproducing the debates that have pitted Habermas against renowned French thinkers (Ricœur, Lyotard, Foucault, Derrida, and so on), we offer here an overview of the evolution of the reactions to the major issues at stake in Habermasian theory.
