This doctoral thesis aims at probing the British poets’ fascination for the sea, in the relatively long era of romanticism in the broad sense of the term, thereby including the post romantic poets, but all the while using a relatively limited corpus since the focus of this thesis is to study, analyse and compare poems with a marine motif. The image that the romantic and postromantic poets have of the sea reflects the crisis of a country in the middle of an industrial revolution, which lastingly disrupted the universal and original harmony which bound men to Nature. On more than one level, the ecological discourse is founded on romantic ideology and its subversive nature. The marine world, which is very frequently conjured up in their poems, serves to frame their poetry and becomes a symbol within a leitmotif which can be found throughout their poetry: the shell. Not only has romantic poetry revolutionised representations of the sea, it has also opened the door to a genuine Sea Writing.
