The French Connection: Between Myths and RealitiesAfter the war, the French Connection was in the hands of the Corsican Mafia of Marseilles, the main global network of heroin trafficking. Since the 1970s there were three myths surrounding it: it had a centralized and pyramidal organization; it thrived in a kind of passivity or even complicity with the authorities; and it was totally abolished in 1973, thanks to political pressure, after a ferocious battle waged by French and American police. Thorough examination of the archives and other sources show, on the contrary, that it was the emerging tip of a very complex world multinational market, that Franco-American collaboration was older and more successful than believed, and that the fight in the early 1970s merely moved certain elements of the system. The French Connection was in reality just one step in the permanent reconfiguration of the world market of illegal heroin smuggling.
