Animal mediation is used as a complement to usual psychiatric care. It appears as a vector of “care” that is often opposed to the notion of “cure” that prevails in all medical care. Can the collaboration between the psychiatrist and their dog reconcile these two dimensions of psychiatric care? In such a case, could the dog claim to have a “career” in psychiatric consultations? The aim of this article is to describe the specificity of this collaboration and the processes at work. With the dog present, the atmosphere is “different, immediately warm.” The dog's “familiarization” abilities humanize the caregiver-patient relationship and destigmatize psychiatry. The animal also appears as a caregiver in its own right during the consultation. We conclude that there are multiple benefits to this approach, both for patients and for caregivers.
