Dès son émergence au XIXe siècle, la photographie, tiraillée entre industrie, science et art, a été tout à la fois objet d’une fascination émerveillée et d’un rejet radical. Ses défenseurs et ses détracteurs mettaient pourtant en avant le même argument : l’automatisme de la machine, gage d’une nouvelle vision et d’une extension du visible pour les uns, instrument d’« appauvrissement du génie artistique français » (Baudelaire [1859] :1975, p. 617) pour les autres. Presque cent soixante-dix ans plus tard, l’intelligence artificielle générative semble d’une manière assez similaire polariser les opinions. À partir de ma propre pratique de l’IA générative — qui est un prolongement d’une pratique photographique — je propose dans cet article dans un premier temps d’examiner ce que les images probabilistes des modèles text-to-image font à l’art et à l’auctorialité, et, dans un second temps, d’explorer comment l’intentionnalité, la subjectivité, la singularité peuvent émerger du dispositif machinique.
