La région Volga-Oural en Russie : Enjeux nationaux dans une région multiethnique

S’appuyant sur les résultats du recensement de 2002 et cherchant à anticiper ceux de 2010, notre article évoque les conditions d’existence et les modes d’expression de la topographie identitaire dans le cas emblématique de la région Volga-Oural. Située au carrefour des mondes finno-ougrien, turcophone et slave, cet espace ouvert simultanément sur la Russie européenne et l’Asie centrale offre une image en miniature de la Russie contemporaine, tant par la diversité ethnoculturelle de sa population que par la variété des défis politiques qui s’y trouvent en jeu. L’héritage historique et l’évolution démographique des différents peuples de la région sont analysés dans le contexte russe actuel pour saisir les perspectives les plus probables d’évolution du fédéralisme russe et du projet patriotique de construction d’un État-nation des habitants de Russie.

Volga-Urals in Russia, National Issues in a multi-ethnic Region Based on the results of the 2002 Russian census and trying to anticipate those of the next 2010 census, our article focuses on the conditions of existence and on the modes of expression of identity topography in the emblematic case of the Volga-Urals region. Located in the crossroad of Finno-Ugric, Turcic and Slavic worlds, this space opened on both European Russia and Central Asia gives a picture in miniature of contemporary Russia, both by the ethnocultural diversity of its population and by the variety of the political challenges locally engaged. Historical background and demographic changes of the different peoples of the region are analyzed in the Russian context to understand the evolution perspectives of Russian federalism and of the the patriotic project to build a Nation State of the inhabitants of Russia.
