Jean-Christophe Sevin, « Marseille 1984. Radio, sound systems and the sonic fiction of Aïoli », Volume !, ID : 10670/1.xzpojw
In the early 1980s, free radio stations played an important role in broadcasting minoritized music that struggled to exist, as was the case for reggae. Combining media and sound studies with an anthropology of culture, this paper investigates Marseille and the radio studios that served as an incubator for the birth of a proto-scene. The sound system practices that emerged in the city gave way to the sonic fiction of the “aioli”, the rallying cry of a collective dynamic. This sonic fiction then allows us to address the way in which a group of enthusiasts take hold of reggae and rub-a-dub, and to critically approach the interpretation of Marseille’s reggae scene as creolization, in favor of an approach in terms of triangulation.
