Starting from the notion of the model defined by Max Black as “heuristic fiction,” this article compares the realist projects of Georges Perec and Balzac, showing that they have several features in common, namely: the use of painting as a model of representation; the contradictory relationship between totalisation and atomisation; the relationship between chance and necessity; the tension between formalisation and the clinamen. These polarities do not indicate a deficiency but the affirmation of literature in the face of the reality it seeks to apprehend and reproduce. According to the poetics of Balzac and Perec, literature is an instrument of knowledge. Realist literature creates an illusion of reality without ever being able to deny the artificial nature of this strategy. This explains the fact that, often, in speaking of the real, the realist text speaks about itself and its principles of construction.
