The practises of bathing in Japan illustrate some specific aspects of the relation to the mother and to the group. They are a daily ritual of transition and purification, a time for the individual identity to merge into positive feelings of belonging to the family group as well as to the Japanese society. Bathing brings back to physical and psychic envelopes, to primary love, to the concept of amae. Bathing is a regression to a matricial state of indistinction, an invitation to primal phantasies. The Shinto and Buddhist mythology, the practises, the folk tales link bathing to Japanese identity. Here, terrifying archaic representations sometimes appear.
