La profession d’agent commercial au XVIIIe siècle à Trieste est mal connue car les marchands eux-mêmes étaient très souvent engagés à la fois dans leurs propres activités commerciales ou productives et dans la représentation dans la cité d’autres maisons de commerce. En raison de ces partiularités, seul le commerce à grande distance permettait de distinguer les représentants d’autres marchands ou les véritables agents commerciaux. Rassemblés dans une sorte de corporation, reconnue par l’administration impériale à Vienne, les membres de ce groupe bénéficiaient d’exemptions douanières et d’autres facilités ; ils comprenaient les marchands typiques du monde préindustriel qui s’adonnaient au commerce, aux activités financières et à l’assurance et investissaient dans la manufacture et l’artisanat. Nous connaissons seulement le nom de quelques-uns de ces agents. En revanche, nous avons beaucoup de documents relatifs à Bernardo Cutica, qui a quitté Buda pour Trieste afin de suivre les affaires de la maison de commerce Brentano Cimaroli e Venino. En fait, les documents accessibles aujourd’hui qui ont trait aux longues poursuites contre lui pour vol et fraude autorisent une étude approfondie de sa vie et de son action. The fraud of Bernardo Cutica, agent from necessity and merchant from aspiration in eighteenth century TriesteIn the eighteenth century, the figure of the business agent in Trieste is hardly documented because the merchants themselves very often were involved both in their own commercial or productive activities and in representing the interests in the town of other merchant houses, engaging themselves in their and other people’s business at the same time. Due to its peculiarities, the group referring to other merchants or to real business agents was the one who followed the long distance trade. Gathered in a sort of corporation, recognized by the Viennese administration, this group enjoyed customs reliefs and other benefits and included those typical merchants of the pre-industrial world, involved in trades, financial activities and insurance and investing in manufacture and handicrafts. We only know the name of some of these agents, whereas we have plenty of documents concerning Bernardo Cutica, who moved from Buda to Trieste to follow the business of the commercial house Brentano Cimaroli e Venino. In fact, the documents nowadays available, regarding the long cause against him for theft and fraud, allow a deep investigation into his life and behaviour. This essay starts from the description of the town and the merchants after the declaration of the free port till the second part of the eighteenth century, goes over the Cutica’s ups and downs, his professional performance, his position and education, connecting them to the process of founding a social capital, based on trust, affecting Trieste in that period.
