Even if they were not well known, Poitiers’ remaining fortifications are interesting. The south West curtain wall with relieving arch and plain semicircular tower is the work of Henry II maybe from 1162. The only remnant of the castle is the Sanitat tower, which has been probably erected by Philippe Auguste after 1204. The other elements are later : Aymard de Beaupuy and du Cordier towers (occidental side) dating back to the 14th century, Benisson tower dating back to the 15th century and the tower towards Rochereuil (North side) dating back to the 16th century. Poitiers is nowadays seen as one of the earliest examples of Plantagenêt fortifications.

Bien que peu connus, les vestiges des fortifications de Poitiers sont encore dignes d'intérêt. La courtine sud-ouest avec arcs de décharge et tours hémicirculaires pleines est l'oeuvre d'Henri II, peut-être après 1162. Le château, dont il ne subsiste que la tour du Sanitat, est vraisemblablement élevé par Philippe Auguste après 1204. Les autres éléments sont postérieurs : XIVe siècle pour les tours Aymard de Beaupuy et du Cordier (flanc occidental), XVe siècle pour la tour Bénisson et XVIe pour la tour vers Rochereuil (flanc nord). Dans l'état actuel des connaissances, Poitiers présente l'un des exemples les plus précoces de la fortification des Plantagenêt.
