Après un succinct rappel historique concernant la discipline du célibat sacerdotal, l’article propose une relecture critique des arguments apportés comme raisons de convenance pour ce choix, en montrant en quoi ils posent question aujourd’hui. La recherche s’ouvre ensuite en trois directions, entre elles imbriquées: une réinterprétation des éléments à l’appui de la discipline du célibat des prêtres, unis aux indications pour l’assumer de façon viable; une exploration du lien positif qui peut subsister entre le mariage et la prêtrise; un cadrage et une réflexion sur la question des viri probati.

After a brief historical look back concerning the discipline of priestly celibacy, this article will provide a critical re-reading of the arguments proposed as reasons of the convenience of this choice, by showing how they pose a problem today. The examination then opens out into three interwoven directions: reinterpretation of the elements supporting the discipline of celibacy of priests, associated with guidance on how to assume it in a viable way; an ex-ploration of the positive link that can subsist between marriage and priesthood; reframing and rethinking the question of the viri probati.
