Nicolas Sarkozy embodied a turning point in the French right-wing history. He represented probably the French version of what was called the “New Right” in the United States or in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. This New Right is what we call in France “la droite décomplexée”, that is to say a right-wing movement that openly defends conservative beliefs without any kind of complex. However, Sarkozysm is not really a political ideology based on a set of ideas. It is, rather, a new way of being involved in politics in France through a new political language and a new political strategy whose aim is to gain power or to stay in power on a conservative stance. In the end, Nicolas Sarkozy’s defeat in 2012 and retreat from political life do not necessarily represent the end of Sarkozysm. Sarkozysm may thus outlive Nicolas Sarkozy.
