Almost 150 years ago, in the countries of the eastern and southern Mediterranean Basin, the Alliance Israélite Universelle created a network of schools using French as language of education. How does evolve this neglected by the general public French-speaking world, while appears little by little the institutionalized French-speaking world? Besides, the creation of the State of Israel and the decolonization disrupt the economic, political and identical data in the area. This paper outlines the development of this specific French-speaking world, and more particularly describes the efforts of Vitalis Danon to manage the Tunis French School after the Second World War.

Il y a presque 150 ans maintenant, l'Alliance Israélite Universelle a créé, dans les pays du bassin méditerranéen oriental et méridional, un réseau d'écoles ayant le français comme langue d'enseignement. Que devient ce monde francophone méconnu du grand public au moment où émerge peu à peu la francophonie institutionnalisée ? La création de l'Etat d'Israël, les processus de la décolonisation bouleversent les données économiques, politiques et identitaires dans cette zone géographique. L'article tente de donner un aperçu du devenir de cette francophonie spécifique en suivant plus particulièrement les efforts de Vitalis Danon, directeur d'école à Tunis après la guerre.
