Summary The relative roles played by the stimulus set exposure duration and the response system (with and without indication of confidence level) were studied in an absolute perception task. The results are discussed in the framework of the equinormal model with fixed criterion. According to the model, the effects due to each of the above variables may be distinguished, providing one uses index xc (i.e. the sigmoldal psychometric function mean) to study the decisional strategy, together with index σB (i.e. the standard deviation of the function) in order to summarize the sensorial performance. This leads to the prediction that exposure duration will have an effect on the slope, whereas the response system would operate at the level of the function mean, since this mean reflects the decision criterion position.
