On the media and political arena, the plurality of legal status of animals is currently being played out. Do the various injunctions that result from this have an impact on the representations and practices of those who work with animals on a daily basis? Based on the case of equidae, the article presents, for France, the diversity and complexity of the management of their exit from work and their end of life. Backed by the theory of gift, the aim of the project is to show that the legal and media systems reflect a moral representation of the relationship with animals which does not necessarily correspond to that of professionals or to their real commitments to their horses. Based on the lexicometric analysis of the corpus of 108 interviews of equine sector professionnals, the article sets out the representations and strategies that professionals use and how they are committed to ensuring a dignified and grateful exit from work and end of life for their animals’ commitment to their work.
