Emilio Muñoz, « Biodiversity and biosafety: Their linkage with biotechnology | Biodiversidad y bioseguridad: Su relacion con la biotecnologia », Digital.CSIC (SHS)
The potential that encompasses the use and applications of biotechnology for a better quality of life may be hampered by strong social reactions. Biosafety and biodiversity are two essential factors for improving the conditions for a good development of biotechnology that would result in socio-economical benefits for the global world. An interactive development of biotechnology which links scientific progress and social interests needs fostering research in the biosafety and biodiversity fields. Rewarding research should be carried out in the application of genetically modified organisms for remediation of critical problems, the improvement in the productivity of the agricultural land, as well as in the uses of the properties of extremophiles. This research should be combined with an adequate social and political frame in order to provide a satisfactory control of all these processes.
