The article focuses on causes for the extinction of the present in modern and postmodern realities; about the institutional standardization of time, the forging of routine gestures, attempts to unify work rhythms, top-down management of time, and the shaping of its experience by individuals. The history of modern practices aimed at progress, haste, and profit maximalization continues to impact social functioning. These practices translate into modern problems with experiencing the present, which is sometimes treated as a link between what was and what will be, a building block of the future or an obstacle that separates us from life, an obstacle that we should wait out. The author claims that although reclaiming the present seems impossible, it is worth finding oneself in the here-and-now. The disorientation and (dis)position of openness – related to the present – provide an opportunity to return to a greater directness, providing possible basis for disagreement and expression of political demands.
