Tekst wychodzi od ustaleń Rebecci Solnit na temat traktowania czytania i pisania jako form podróży. Następnie zestawia je z praktykami średniowiecznych mnichów przy kontemplacji Pisma Świętego i praktykowaniem sztuki przez lud Yolngu. Wnioski pozwalają autorowi na zarysowanie tła dla analizy twórczości Wassilego Kadinskiego. Dzięki temu może zrewidować ustalenia dotyczące właściwości wyobraźni.

Ingold begins with Rebecca Solnit’s findings on treating reading and writing as forms of travel. Next, he compares them with the medieval monks’ practices of contemplating the Bible and with the Yolngu people’s way of practicing art. The conclusions allow Ingold to outline the background for his analysis of Wassily Kandinsky’s work. Thanks to this, he can revise the findings on the properties of imagination.
