The advantages of a grassroots-political and quantitative approach for understanding the growth of the Observant movement

This chapter focuses on our narratives of the growth of the Observant reform movement in the Dominican province of Teutonia; on how well the historical data fit these models; and on the means by which this correspondence might be improved. Quantitative analysis of Observant Dominican houses in Teutonia reveals six phases of growth between 1389-1499. However, there is a general lack of correspondence between this pattern and our modern growth narratives, mainly because we have based our accounts on top-down political and qualitative analysis, instead of that which is bottom-up, grassroots-political and quantitative. We could build a more accurate understanding of the growth of the Observant movement through a collaborative digital humanities project.

Ce chapitre se concentre sur le mouvement observant dans la province dominicaine de Teutonie. Il s’agit de confronter la manière dont les historiens ont décrit son développement avec les données pour tenter d’améliorer nos modèles. Une analyse quantitative des établissements dominicains observants en Teutonie révèle six phases de croissance entre 1389 et 1499. Or, il y a un manque général de correspondance entre ce modèle et le discours des historiens, essentiellement du fait que les travaux historiques ont été fondés sur une analyse politique et qualitative du haut vers le bas, au lieu d’adopter un point de vue quantitatif, qui parte des réalités locales. De fait, nous pourrions mieux comprendre la croissance du mouvement observant grâce à un projet collaboratif faisant appel aux humanités numériques.
