Résumé 0

The article compares the histories of two distinct but interconnected examples of genocide: colonialism in North America and the Holocaust. The authors – a daughter of survivors of Canadian residential schools and a daughter of a Holocaust survivor – jointly reflect on the history of gendered violence as a tool of war, genocide, and cultural destruction, viewed through the lens of material evidence housed in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. They consider the role of exhibited photographs, clothing, everyday objects, and cultural heritage items in both conveying ideas about sexuality and gender in contexts of extreme danger as well as in preserving cultural identity and fostering spiritual resistance among members of endangered communities.
