Con la Crónica real, Alfonso X había elaborado un modelo de composición histórica del que sus inmediatos sucesores supieron aprovecharse sin modificar fundamentalmente su economía. Cuando, un siglo después de la muerte del Rey Sabio, Pero López de Ayala retoma el proyecto por su cuenta, las circunstancias políticas han cambiado mucho y una adaptación del esquema inicial se hace necesaria. El nuevo cronista sabe preservar las apariencias de la fidelidad al modelo pero, de hecho, aporta modificaciones que van a poner en tela de juicio la concepción de la historia imperante hasta entonces. With the Royal Chronicle, Alfonso X had produced a model of historical writing which was taken up by his immediate successors without altering its basic premises. When Pero López de Ayala resumed the task on his own account a century after the death of Alfonso the Wise, the political circumstances had changed greatly and the original schema was in need of updating. The new chronicler successfully kept up the appearance of fidelity to the model, but in fact he introduced modifications which would call into question the concept of history prevailing up to that time.
