Il existe au Kérala des consultations astrologiques conçues pour traiter les questions relatives au fonctionnement des temples. Ces consultations ont un double effet. D’une part, elles font un véritable audit : évaluation de la nature et de la force des présences divines, de l’état des effigies et des bâtiments, de l’adéquation du service rituel, de la qualité de la gestion. Le diagnostic débouche sur l’indication des mesures à prendre dans ces divers domaines, ce qui amène souvent à des modifications conséquentes des sanctuaires et des rites (parfois même une redéfinition des identités divines). D’autre part, les consultations « dévoilent » le passé du temple. De ce fait, les modifications prescrites ne sont pas conçues comme étant des innovations, mais comme corrigeant des erreurs antérieures. L’article examine comment ces deux aspects des consultations astrologiques se combinent, et quelles sont les procédures concrètes permettant l’élaboration du diagnostic lors des interactions entre astrologues et responsables des temples – élaboration qui ne va pas sans paradoxes.

The effect of such a procedure is twofold. On the one hand, it is a full audit and it assesses the identity and power of the temple’s divine entities, the physical State of the idols and of the buildings, the adequacy of rituals performed, the management of the temple. Accordingly, the astrologers conclude by prescribing what has to be done in all these domains. Quite often, this entails significant modifications in the rituals and in the temple (sometimes even a redefinition of the deities said to be there). On the other hand, this astrological procedure ‘reveals’ the past of the temple. As a consequence, prescribed modifications are not conceived to be innovations, but mere corrections of past faults. The paper investigates how both aspects of the astrological process combine. The study of the precise interaction between astrologers and temple managers, which enables the élaboration of the final diagnosis, suggests that such an elaboration is not devoid of paradoxes.
