Si presentano in questa sede alcune riflessioni preliminari a un riesame della produzione epigrafica ostiense di committenza cristiana, mai stata oggetto di uno studio monografico, in vista dell’edizione di un volume delle Inscriptiones christianae Italiae. Delle numerose iscrizioni di carattere funerario si evidenziano soprattutto i caratteri del formulario, con particolare riferimento a quelle espressioni utili a definire il processo di formazione di un linguaggio specifico dei cristiani nel III secolo. Si riflette anche sulle non molte epigrafi riferibili a funzioni non sepolcrali. Esse, seppure di scarso numero, attestano l’interesse evergetico da parte di personaggi appartenenti a una delle principali famiglie romane, quella degli Anici. Sono rare anche le iscrizioni che attestano l’iniziativa episcopale, diversamente da quanto si riscontra nella vicina città di Portus.

Some preliminary data resulting from a re-examination of the Christian epigraphic production of Ostia are here presented; these data have never been the topic of a monographic study, with the perspective of an edition for the Inscriptiones christianae Italiae. Of the numerous funerary inscriptions, I examine especially the features of the formulary, with reference to those expressions useful to define the process of formation of a specific language of Christians in the third century. Some considerations concern the not many epigraphs referable to non-sepulchral functions. Although small in number, they attest to the evergetic interest on the part of characters belonging to one of the main Roman families, that of the Anici. Are almost infrequent the inscriptions attesting the episcopal initiative, unlike what is found in nearby city of Portus.
