The design of this volume has deeply branching roots. Its inception goes as far back as Fall 1998, when Pierre-Antoine Fabre and Walter S. Melion first met in the Faculty Club of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. Their conversation, and the mutual encouragement they offered then and in its aftermath, led both Fabre and Melion to continue their respective projects on the visual culture of the early Society of Jesus.
