While the cultivation of citrus fruits in Egypt is thought to have a long history, there is surprisingly little known about its earliest introduction. It is generally assumed that citron (Citrus medica) is the first of the citrus fruits to reach the Mediterranean, probably via Persia and Mesopotamia in the late 4th century BC, associated with Alexander’s campaigns.
