Résumé 0

The Toulouse metropolitan area covers an surface of 465km². It comprises 37 municipalities with a population of more than 714,000 inhabitants. It provides a valuable experimental laboratory for urban archaeology. We provide a methodological overview of a decade of preventive archaeology in the heart of this vast European metropolis. Toulouse contains all the elements of urban phenomena. Set on a plain, it was first settled in the Iron Age. Under the Roman Empire, it had the status of civitas, later becoming the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom. It also held an important position during the Middle Ages and Modern times. Following a critical review, we discuss the prospects for incorporating archaeological projects in urban development.
