L’étude porte d’abord sur l’Arménie du ive siècle sous influence iranienne, convertie au christianisme où se développa une littérature militante, fondée sur la Bible, qui inspira une série d’historiens. Puis au Ve siècle, la persécution antiarménienne des Sassanides entraîna la réaction des princes qui accompagnèrent le roi sassanide sur le champs de bataille en récitant des psaumes. S’il eut quelque tentation des princes d’apostasier, le clergé et le peuple frayèrent la voie à la résistance. Tous s’y rallièrent et la bataille d’Awarayr (451) compte des héros dont le prince Vardan Marmikonian, des nobles par dizaines, en tout plus de 800 hommes. Finalement on assiste à la définition d’un héroïsme chrétien spécifique aux Arméniens. L’appellation de martyr fut aussi bien décernée aux guerriers, qui défendaient l’Arménie, qu’à ceux qui étaient torturés et exécutés pour la foi. Les uns et les autres purent être canonisés.

This study first considers fourth-century Armenia under Iranian influence and having converted to Christianity, at a time when the country witnessed the development of a warrior literature founded on the Bible, which would inspire a series of historians. Then, in the fifth century, anti-Armenian persecution by the Sassanids entailed the reaction of the princes, who accompanied the Sassanid king on the battlefield, reciting psalms. If there was some temptation towards apostasy among the princes, the clergy and the people paved the way to resistance. All rallied to the cause and the Battle of Awarayr (451) numbered heroes including Prince Vardan Marmikonian, dozens of nobles, and in total over 800 men. This eventually led to the definition of a Christian heroism that was specific to Armenia. The term martyr was bestowed equally on warriors, who defended Armenia, and those who were tortured and executed for the faith. In addition, both could be canonized.
