Le livre riche de contrastes que Zweig a consacré à Verlaine (1905) n’a jusqu’alors que peu retenu l’attention, ce qui peut surprendre dans la mesure où il s’agit de son premier essai biographique et de la première biographie en langue allemande dédiée au poète français. Après avoir reconstitué la genèse de ce texte, nous le replaçons dans le contexte plus large de la réception du symbolisme français et de Verlaine en Allemagne et en Autriche, pour montrer d’abord ce qu’il doit à son époque. Il s’agit ensuite d’en analyser les particularités stylistiques et narratives, marquées par une démarche psychologisante et déterministe, et de suggérer enfin, à partir d’une comparaison avec le texte d’introduction aux œuvres complètes de Verlaine, Paul Verlaines Lebensbild (1922), comment les évolutions dessinent le portrait d’un anti-démon.

Zweigs zwiespältiges Porträt Paul Verlaines (1905) hat bis jetzt relativ wenig Beachtung gefunden, was umso mehr erstaunt, als es sich sowohl um dessen allererste Dichterbiografie als auch überhaupt um die erste deutschsprachige Monographie über diesen französischen Lyriker handelt. Vor der Folie der Rezeption Verlaines und des französischen Symbolismus in Österreich und Deutschland soll erstens aufgezeigt werden, was Zweigs Essay seiner Zeit schuldet. Die thematische Struktur und der von psychologisierenden und deterministischen Argumenten gekennzeichnete Ansatz soll dann anhand einiger konkreter Beispiele analysiert werden. Zum Schluss sollen die Akzentverlagerungen zwischen dem frühen Essay und dem späteren Einleitungstext zur zweibändigen Verlaine-Ausgabe (Paul Verlaines Lebensbild, 1922) im Sinne einer Definition des antidämonischen Künstlers nachgezeichnet und ausgelegt werden.

Zweig’s book full of contrasts on Verlaine (1905) has so far attracted little attention, which may be surprising since it is his first biographical essay and the first German-language biography dedicated to the French poet. After reconstructing the genesis of this text, we will place it in the broader context of the reception of French symbolism and Verlaine in Germany and Austria, to show first what he owes to his time. We will then analyse its stylistic and narrative particularities, marked by a psychologising and deterministic approach, and finally suggest, on the basis of a comparison with the introductory text to Verlaine’s complete works, Paul Verlaines Lebensbild (1922), how the evolutions draw the portrait of an anti-daemon.
