Dédicaces d’affranchis à Larissa (Thessalie)

Les inscriptions présentées dans cet article proviennent du second théâtre de Larissa qui a été construit au ier s. av. J.‑C. avec des blocs de remploi provenant d’un bâtiment arrondi, appartenant à un sanctuaire. Certains de ces blocs portent des dédicaces faites par des affranchis à une divinité qui n’est jamais nommée ; la nature de l’objet consacré n’est jamais précisée (peut‑être s’agit‑il de la pierre elle‑même ?). Ces inscriptions, qui datent de la fin du iiie s.-début du iie s. av. J.‑C, sont toutes en dialecte thessalien. Les noms des affranchis sont généralement accompagnés d’un adjectif patronymique, toujours différent du nom de leur manumissor, dont on ne peut dire s’il correspond au nom de leur père ou à celui de leur ancien maître. Certains des affranchissements mentionnés dans ces dédicaces apparaissent comme consécutifs à un héritage et il se pourrait que ce soit le cas de l’ensemble de ces inscriptions. Ces dédicaces constituent vraisemblablement une première forme de la taxe d’affranchissement.

Οι επιγραφές που δηµοσιεύονται στο άρθρο αυτό προέρχονται από το δεύτερο θέατρο της Λάρισας, που κτίστηκε στον 1ο αι. π.Χ., µε λίθους σε δεύτερη χρήση προερχόµενους από ένα κυκλικό οικοδόµηµα, που ανήκε σε ιερό. Μερικοί από αυτούς τους λίθους φέρουν αναθηµατικές επιγραφές από απελεύθερους προς µια θεότητα που δεν ονοµάζεται ποτέ. Ούτε το αντικείµενο που προσφέρεται στη θεότητα προσδιορίζεται (επρόκειτο ίσως για τον ίδιο το λίθο;). Οι επιγραφές χρονολογούνται στα τέλη του 3ου και στις αρχές του 2ου αι. π.Χ. και είναι όλες γραµµένες σε θεσσαλική διάλεκτο. Τα ονόµατα των απελεύθερων συνοδεύονται συνήθως από ένα πατρωνυµικό επίθετο, πάντοτε διαφορετικό από το όνοµα του απελευθερωτή τους, για το οποίο δεν µπορούµε να είµαστε βέβαιοι αν αντιστοιχεί στο όνοµα του πατέρα τους ή σε εκείνο του πρώην κυρίου τους. Μερικές από τις πράξεις απελευθέρωσης που αναφέρονται στις επιγραφές συνέβησαν µετά από την αποδοχή µιας κληρονοµιάς και µπορεί αυτό να ίσχυε για το σύνολο των επιγραφών. Οι αναθηµατικές αυτές επιγραφές αποτελούν πιθανότατα µια πρώτη µορφή φόρου πράξης απελευθέρωσης.

These inscriptions come from the second theatre of Larissa, built during the 1st century BC with reused blocks from a circular building belonging to a sanctuary. Some of these blocks are engraved with dedications of an unspecified object (perhaps the stone itself?) made by freed slaves to an unnamed deity. They all are written in thessalian dialect and can be dated back to the end of the 3rd c./beginning of the 2nd c. BC. These freed slaves were generally named using a patronymic adjective which was always different from the name of their manumissor, and it is not possible to say whether this is a patronymic or the name of the slave’s former owner. Some of the manumissions mentioned in these dedications seem to be resulting from an inheritance and it may be the same for all of these inscriptions. These dedications must likely be considered as a first form of the manumission fees.
